With August here, the traditional summer movie season has just a month to go. July featured a solid month of franchise blockbusters and original films. But it also featured a couple of total busts. I have to admit, I have not seen The Emoji Movie yet, but I would imagine it would definitely be the worst of the month. That being said, of the eight films I saw in July, there was a total disaster, and a masterpiece.

The Best: Dunkirk
Dunkirk just floored me. I have seen it twice and still contend the movie is Nolan’s masterpiece. Technically, the film is breathtaking. I had a chance to see the movie in the format Nolan made it for, IMAX 70mm film, and it is a stunning masterpiece and Nolan’s best film. Perfect scores are hard to come by, maybe I’m too liberal. However, Dunkirk is a perfect movie, and the best of the year so far.
Honorable Mentions: War For The Planet of the Apes, Spider-Man: Homecoming

The Worst: Wish Upon
This movie is terrible. It has nothing but stupid characters, stupid plot, predictable action and cheap jump scares. It’s another PG-13 horror flick made for cheap, and cashing in at the box office. The movie has made its budget back and I’m sure was a hit with its target demographic. Its one of the worst of the year, and I guess we should’ve seen it coming
Honorable Mentions: I’m sure if I had seen The Emoji Movie these two movies would be flip-flopped.
