Modest box office return and lukewarm critical reception isn’t steering Warner Bros. away from a sequel to their 2016 film The Accountant. The Ben Affleck starrer is reportedly getting a sequel according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter. The trade, while reporting that Affleck will return, is also stating director Gavin O’Connor will also return to direct the sequel.
The Accountant managed to earn $86 million at the domestic box office almost doubling the films budget. The action-thriller was given a score of 51 on Metacritic, essentially garnering mixed reviews. However, Affleck has a long standing working relationship with Warner Bros. who distributed his most recent directorial effort, Live By Night, and also his Oscar winning Argo. The former of which did not find either critical or box office success.
The films plot revolves around a highly functioning autistic man (Affleck) who is an accountant doing work with criminal organizations. The original also starred JK Simmons, Anna Kendrick and Jon Bernthal. It is unclear at this time if that trio actors will return to the films sequel. The report does mention that screenwriter Bill Dubuque is also in talks at this point to return as well.
