Marvel Studios unveiled a first look at its upcoming superhero property Black Panther on Thursday.

The studio took to social media to unveil the movies first poster and subsequently dropped a teaser trailer during game four of the NBA finals Thursday night.

The poster (right) shows the title character in costume, minus the mask, on a throne. Black Panther, played by Chadwick Boseman, had a small role in last years Captain America: Civil War. T’Challa has become the king of the fictional country Wakanda and has also taken up the mantle of Black Panther, a meaningful icon to the people of Wakanda.

The trailer also shows a few recurring characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They are Martin Freeman as Everett Ross, who also appeared in Civil War and Ulysses Klaw (Andy Serkis), who made an appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron. They talk about the mystery behind the country and how little people know about it.

Marvel also released an official synopsis that reads: “Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.”

Black Panther is directed by Ryan Coogler (Creed, Fruitvale Station) and along with Boseman stars Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Angela Bassett, Daniel Kaluuya, Forest Whitaker and Sterling K. Brown. The film opens in theaters on February 16, 2018.
